When Major Sinclair Yeates, a retired British army officer, is appointed Resident Magistrate in the remote west of Ireland, he expects a quiet life of legal routine. Instead, he finds himself plunged into a world of chaotic horse fairs, bewildering legal cases, and the irresistible schemes of his neighbour Flurry Knox. From a disastrous hunt that ends in a bog to a race meeting where the horses are as unpredictable as the bookmakers, Yeates discovers that justice in this part of the world is a flexible concept—and that the locals have a genius for turning every situation into a story. This modern retelling captures all the humour, heart, and horseplay of the original, making the adventures of Major Yeates and his irrepressible Irish friends feel as fresh as if they happened yesterday. Part of Timeless Classics.
