Negative information does not simply compete for attention alongside the positive - it arrives first, feels more

urgent than it should, and quietly reshapes your judgment before you realize it was given disproportionate

weight. Part of The Bias Files, Simon Blackwood's insightful book explores the negativity bias: the documented

tendency for bad to outweigh good in decisions that feel perfectly rational from the inside.

When negative evidence enters a decision - a critical comment in a performance review, a single bad product

rating, a partner's sharp word in an otherwise solid marriage - it stops being one data point among many and

becomes the anchor that everything else is measured against. Why Bad Beats Good is not a self-help manual, a

relationship guide, or a corporate training deck. Instead, it reconstructs, forensically, how this one cognitive

distortion operates across seven unrelated domains, showing you what the bias actually costs and where it hides

in plain sight.

Through scenarios drawn from real decision contexts, you will trace the negativity bias as it reshapes judgment

in concrete settings:

- The One Bad Word:** Why a shopper scrolling through two hundred product reviews stops cold at the

sixth scathing one, rereads it, and leaves the tab undecided - even when one hundred ninety-four reviews

praised the same product.

- The Comment You Remember:** How a marketing manager leaves her annual review able to recite the

two-sentence criticism verbatim while struggling to recall any of the eleven points of praise her manager

documented.

- If It Bleeds:** Why readers and viewers report wanting more positive news coverage yet reliably click the

crime story and skim past the recovery piece, forcing editors to choose between stated preferences and
