A ruthless chieftain, a sacred stallion, a shepherd caught between honor and necessity — and one of the most haunting stories ever written in the Norse world. In 'The Saga of Hrafnkel,' a powerful priest of the god Freyr makes a grim vow to kill anyone who rides his beloved horse Freyfaxi without permission. When his own shepherd is forced to ride the horse, the vow sets in motion a chain of revenge, law, and humiliation that will test every character's measure of justice. This new edition renders the saga in clear, present-day English that preserves its fierce economy and bitter wisdom, while a full introduction, glossary, and reader's notes place it in the world of Viking-Age Iceland. Timeless in its questions — whether pride can be humbled, whether mercy is strength or weakness, and how fate bends around the choices we make — it reads as freshly as the day it was composed.
