Two and a half thousand years ago, in the royal library of Nineveh, Assyrian scholar-priests gathered the dreams of the ancient world into a single great book. The Assyrian Dream Book, a new translation of the cuneiform series Zaqīqu, brings this oldest of dream guides to today's readers in clear, faithful modern English. Here are the dreamer's journeys over rivers and up to heaven, the table groaning with bread and wine, gardens, storm skies, beasts, strangers, and the beloved dead — each vision answered with its good or troubling meaning, as the priests wrote it. The work closes with the dreamer's oldest prayers: petitions to Shamash and the Gods of the Night, and rituals for turning aside a heavy dream. Warmly introduced and carefully annotated, this edition honours the original's meaning and spirit while making it inviting to read now. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
