For more than five hundred years, the hymns of Bhagat Ravidas have been sung by millions — in village gatherings, in Sikh gurdwaras, and in the worship of his Ravidasi followers. A leatherworker of Banaras who lived and labored among the poorest, Ravidas sang of a God who needs no temple, no priest, no pedigree: a God met in the pure heart, in honest work, and in the company of the humble. His verses cut through caste and ritual to the one thing needful — the divine Name — and they close with a radiant vision of Begampura, the city without sorrow, where no one is a stranger and all are free. This edition offers his complete hymns in clear, faithful modern English, with an introduction to his life and world, notes on his key ideas, and guidance for reading his songs today.
