Written in a Syrian monastery almost thirteen hundred years ago, The Chronicle of Zuqnin is one of the great unnoticed masterpieces of the world's spiritual literature. Its nameless author set out to tell the whole story of God's dealings with humanity — from creation, through the age of the prophets and the life of Christ, to the councils and martyrs of the early church — and then, in a leap of astonishing boldness, recorded the events of his own troubled lifetime under the first Abbasid caliphs. Here flood and famine, plague and earthquake, tax collector and caliph, vision and dream all appear in a single continuous pageant, seen by a monk whose faith never deserted him. This faithful modern-English edition makes his chronicle readable for today's audience while preserving its timeliness, its concreteness, and its profound confidence that history is held in God's hands.
