For more than a millennium, the homilies of Jacob of Serugh have drawn readers and worshipers into a deep, imaginative engagement with Scripture. As a master poet of the Syriac tradition, Jacob weaves together the stories of the Old and New Testaments with a tender, mellow rhythm and a keen spiritual eye. In these verse meditations—on the patriarchs, the life of Christ, the sacraments, and the struggle of the soul—he invites us into a quiet, luminous world where each biblical figure becomes a mirror of the human encounter with the divine. This modern translation preserves the poetic spirit of the original while offering vivid, accessible language for today’s reader. Each homily is a gentle invitation to ponder, to pray, and to see the beloved familiar stories anew. Whether you are new to the ancient Church or a seasoned companion of the way, these pages offer a timeless sustenance for the inner life. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
