He kept every commandment of his god. He said his prayers. And still everything was taken from him. Ludlul Bēl Nēmeqi — 'Let Me Praise the Lord of Wisdom' — is ancient Babylon's most dearly loved spiritual poem: the story of a great nobleman stripped of wealth, health, honor, and every friend he had, who is left to ask whether faithfulness means anything when heaven stays silent. Often remembered as 'the Babylonian Job,' this edition offers the work in clear, fluent, present-day English that honors the beauty and grief of the original Akkadian. Across four tablets, readers walk with the sufferer through his sudden fall, his sleepless nights of fever and torment, his three mysterious dreams, and his astonishing restoration at the hands of the god Marduk — and they discover an ancient and startling answer to a timeless question: can a person trust the divine when every visible sign points to abandonment?
