For more than seven hundred years, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has read the Synaxarium aloud through every season of the year — the lives of patriarchs and prophets, apostles and martyrs, desert monks and Ethiopian founders, remembered day by day until they feel like family. This modern-English edition brings that great work of the Ge'ez tradition to today's readers in clear, flowing prose. It follows the calendar of the church year, from the Feast of the True Cross in Meskerem to the quiet days of Pagumen, opening a door onto a world where the visible and invisible meet, where courage and humility become a daily vocabulary, and where Ethiopia and Egypt, temple and mountain cave, scripture and story, all belong to the same holy story. Faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original, this is an edition for meditation, for liturgy, and for discovery. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
