This beautiful medieval Irish tale of love, jealousy, and enchantment is one of the oldest and most haunting stories to survive from the Celtic world. It begins in the shimmering mounds of the fairy people, where the lovely Étaín wins the heart of Midir, king of the Síde — and arouses the druidic jealousy of his first wife, Fuamnach. Changed into a pool of water, then a butterfly, Étaín is blown by a sorcerous wind for seven years until she falls into a queen's cup and is born again as a mortal woman. As wife of the High King of Ireland she seems at last safe — until Midir comes to Tara to win her back by a fatal game of chess. Presented in clear, inviting modern English yet faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original, this edition opens a door onto a world of shape-shifting gods, fairy courts, and the human heart's oldest longings.
