Three thousand years before our time, the storm-god Baal thundered across the skies of an ancient city on the Syrian coast. When French archaeologists uncovered the clay tablets of Ugarit at Ras Shamra in 1929, they opened a door onto one of the oldest and most stirring epics of the ancient world. In these pages Baal contends with the raging Sea for the throne of the gods, builds his luminous palace on the sacred mountain, and descends into the very jaws of Death - only to return, bringing rain and life to the exhausted earth. This faithful modern-English edition renders the cycle in clear, inviting prose that preserves the strangeness and beauty of the original, with an introduction, chapter guidance, a glossary, and passages for reflection. Ancient in origin, startling in its power, this epic now speaks with fresh clarity to today's readers. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
