Jonathan Calder knows that consequences rarely fall on the people who deserve them.

For years, he has used that power to punish the cruel, the arrogant and the abusive. He keeps physical reminders of those judgements and takes a private satisfaction in watching people receive their just deserts. In his mind, he is restoring balance.

When Jonathan discovers what she has done, his instinct is to judge her before he understands the truth. Forced to confront the difference between murder and survival, justice and revenge, he must finally ask whether his power has made him a protector-or simply another dangerous man convinced that he is right.

As buried crimes return and a man believed dead steps out of the shadows, Jonathan and Nell must decide whether love can survive the truth about them both.

Because every choice leaves a consequence.

And love may be the heaviest one of all
