In a village of the Punjab, a boy is born to a Hindu accountant and his wife; within a generation the Sikh tradition will trace to him its entire inheritance of light. The Janamsakhis are the beloved life-stories of Guru Nanak, not a single book by a single hand but a river of remembered narrative, set down in the early seventeenth century and carried ever since. Here you will meet the child who reads invisible letters, the storekeeper who gives away the king's treasure to the hungry, the man who vanishes into the river and returns silent; you will walk his four great journeys to the shrines of Hindus and Muslims, to the mountain of the yogis, and through the bloodshed of Babur's armies; and you will rest with him at last in the village he named Kartarpur, the City of the Creator. This modern-English edition keeps the story's cadence and wonder while speaking directly to today's readers. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
