For centuries, the homilies of Gregory Palamas, the great Byzantine archbishop and saint, have been treasured in the Orthodox world as masterpieces of preaching, at once profound, warm, and direct. Preached in Thessalonica in the fourteenth century on the feasts and fasts of the church year, they carry the reader from the Nativity of the Virgin to the Sunday of the Last Judgment, from the bright night of Pascha to the glory of the Transfiguration. This edition renders his enduring classic into clear, inviting, present-day English while remaining faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original. Whether Palamas is unfolding the mystery of the uncreated light, the love of God in Christ, the veneration of the holy icons, or the simple labor of repentance, he speaks with a teacher's patience and a pastor's heart. A brief introduction and helpful appendices open the way for the modern reader. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
