In a monastery on Mount Athos in the fourteenth century, monks practiced a prayer of deep stillness — slow breathing, a single repeated prayer, the mind gathered into the heart — and claimed that, in such stillness, they saw the uncreated light of God. A visiting scholar, Barlaam of Calabria, denounced them as deluded and their teaching as blasphemy. Gregory Palamas, himself a monk, answered in The Triads: a work in three groups of three books that is at once a profound theology, a guide to interior prayer, and a vision of the light that shone around Christ on Mount Tabor. This modern-English edition makes Palamas's great defense accessible for today's readers — seekers, contemplatives, students of spirituality, and anyone drawn to the world's enduring masterpieces of the inner life. It includes an introduction, a glossary of names and terms, key passages to remember, and practical guidance for reading. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
