The Gods of Pegāna is a pioneering work of fantasy by Lord Dunsany that presents a completely imaginary mythology centered on the mysterious gods of Pegāna. Rather than following a conventional plot, the book consists of interconnected myths, legends, prayers, and tales describing the creation of the world and the strange divine powers that govern it. At the center of this mythology is Mana-Yood-Sushai, the supreme deity who creates the gods and then falls into an eternal sleep.

The lesser gods of Pegāna possess extraordinary powers but are themselves subject to mysterious forces and limitations. Figures such as Skarl, the drummer who keeps the sleeping creator from waking, and Kib, the god of chance, appear throughout the stories. Mortals live beneath the uncertain influence of these supernatural beings, often attempting to understand or appease forces beyond their comprehension.

Dunsany’s poetic and archaic style gives the work the atmosphere of an ancient sacred mythology, while his dark humor and philosophical imagination add depth to the tales. The book explores creation, fate, mortality, chaos, divine power, and humanity’s fragile place in the universe. The Gods of Pegāna is widely regarded as an important early influence on modern fantasy literature.
