For centuries, the worshippers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church have lifted their hearts to heaven in a great family of Eucharistic prayers known as the anaphoras. This new modern-English edition brings together the principal texts of that ancient collection — the prayers attributed to the Apostles, to Our Lady Mary, to Saint John the Evangelist, to Saint John Chrysostom, and many more — in clear, welcoming language that preserves their wonder and dignity. Readers will encounter the soaring thanksgiving for creation, the angelic hymn of the Sanctus, the solemn remembrance of Christ's saving death and resurrection, and the tender intercessions for the living and the departed. Here is the liturgy as living devotion, with its rhythms of praise, confession, awe, and peace. Faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original Ge'ez, this edition invites the general reader into a treasury of faith that has sustained millions of believers for more than fifteen centuries.
