For over a thousand years, Al-Jahiz's The Book of Animals has delighted and instructed readers across the Islamic world and beyond. Written in ninth-century Basra, this vast and playful encyclopedia is far more than a natural history: it is a meditation on the wisdom of creation, a treasury of poetry and proverb, and a celebration of the astonishing variety of living things—from the noble camel to the humble fly. This modern-English edition makes Al-Jahiz's masterpiece accessible to today's readers in clear, inviting prose. Faithful to the original's meaning and spirit, it preserves the author's wit, his curiosity, and his reverence for the natural world. Whether you come to it as a lover of nature, a student of Islamic civilization, or a seeker of timeless wisdom, you will find here a book that speaks across the centuries with warmth and wonder. Part of The Sacred Wisdom Library.
