Shenoute of Atripe, the great abbot of Egypt's White Monastery, was the most powerful Christian voice of the late antique desert. His Discourses — fiery sermons and teachings delivered to monks, nuns, and villagers — thundered against heresy, idolatry, and moral compromise, while also offering tender guidance on repentance, prayer, and the love of God. This modern-English edition renders Shenoute's Coptic eloquence in clear, inviting prose, faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original. Readers will encounter a prophet who denounced injustice without flinching and a shepherd who urged every soul toward transformation. Whether addressing the resurrection of the body, the danger of false teaching, or the daily discipline of the monastic life, Shenoute speaks with an urgency that still resonates. Here the desert father speaks again, inviting modern readers into a world of fierce faith and deep compassion. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
