What makes a society truly good? In this timeless classic, the great philosopher Al-Farabi—revered as the 'Second Teacher' after Aristotle—answers with a vision of a city built on wisdom, justice, and the pursuit of true happiness. Written in the tenth century, 'The Virtuous City' weaves together Greek philosophy, Neoplatonic cosmology, and Islamic spirituality to explore the nature of the soul, the order of the cosmos, and the qualities of the ideal ruler. This modern-English edition renders Al-Farabi's profound ideas in clear, inviting prose, faithful to the original's meaning and spirit. Whether you are a student of philosophy, a seeker of spiritual insight, or simply curious about the roots of political thought, this book offers a luminous guide to living well together.
