For centuries, readers have turned to the desert elders of Gaza for counsel that cuts through the noise of ordinary life. Barsanuphius and John answered hundreds of questions — from monks struggling with temptation to bishops facing conflict, from parents grieving to merchants weighing a decision — with honesty, warmth, and unflinching clarity. This edition presents their letters in clear, present-day English, faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original Greek, and invites modern readers to meet the elders as companions rather than monuments. Each letter opens a door onto a way of living marked by humility, patience, and trust in God. Whether you are new to the Christian classics or returning to them, these pages speak directly to the questions we still carry. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
