Written more than twelve hundred years ago and still chanted every Lent in Orthodox churches throughout the world, the Great Canon of Saint Andrew is one of Christianity's most moving and personal expressions of repentance. In this edition, the seventh-century Byzantine hymn is offered as a living voice for today's reader: a modern-English rendering that keeps the beauty, honesty, and vivid biblical imagery of the original while remaining clear and inviting. Following the poet's nine odes through the great figures of Scripture — from Adam and Eve, through David and the prophets, to the Mother of God — the reader is drawn into a sustained conversation between a repentant soul and its own heart. Each canticle becomes both a mirror and a doorway, and the result is a reading experience as intimate as a private confession. This is a faithful modern-English edition of one of the world's spiritual treasures. Part of The World Scriptures Library.
