She was never supposed to be more than a temporary assignment. Overflow days, a borrowed desk, a temporary badge. Caroline ran her floor with a blunt competence that never softened itself for outsiders, and he matched that energy without thinking. What began as practical texts and late-night games after the office emptied slowly turned into something neither of them named out loud. Conversations that drifted too far. A question that should have ended the call. A dare spoken in the dark that he decided to collect in person.

The first night he showed up, the cold was sharp enough to hurt. She cursed him at the door, called him crazy, and still let him in. They kept their clothes on. Shared one quilt. Tested the distance between them by careful inches until the distance itself began to feel like the real risk. When the moment came that could have broken everything, he stopped. That single decision changed the shape of every night that followed.

What came after was quieter, more deliberate, and far more difficult to walk away from. Nights that started with the same restrained closeness and ended with a kind of intimacy neither of them had planned. Workplace hallways the next morning that felt too bright. Messages that arrived later and later. A private pattern that kept repeating long after both of them knew better.
