When a portrait captures Dorian Gray's beauty at its absolute peak, he makes an offhand wish that he could stay exactly as he is — and the painting could age instead. The wish comes true. Years of vanity, cruelty, and increasingly serious sin leave no mark on his face at all; they show up, one by one, on the canvas locked away in his attic. Wilde's only novel is both a glittering, quotable comedy of Victorian manners and a genuinely unsettling meditation on what a person becomes when there's no visible cost to being terrible.
Considered scandalous on publication and now a cornerstone of gothic literature — the definitive story about the gap between how someone looks and what they actually are.
