As the Age of Myth gradually faded into the past, China's first dynasty officially stepped onto the stage of history.
The Xia Dynasty remains one of the most debated periods in Chinese history. Some believe it truly existed, while others question its existence due to the incomplete archaeological and written evidence. Yet regardless of where the truth ultimately lies, historical records, ancient myths, and folk legends passed down over thousands of years have together painted the picture of an extraordinary age.
Dynasty Decoded: China, Volume 2 is neither an academic study nor a work of historical criticism. Instead, drawing primarily from classical texts such as the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) and the Bamboo Annals (Zhúshū Jìnián), together with myths and legends preserved through the centuries, this book retells the story of the Xia Dynasty in an engaging and accessible way.
From Yu the Great's founding of the dynasty, Qi's establishment of hereditary succession, the fall of Taikang, the Restoration of Shaokang, and the tyranny of King Jie, to Cheng Tang's revolution that brought the Xia Dynasty to an end, the choices made by these remarkable figures shaped the rise and fall of China's earliest dynasty.
For now, let us set aside the question of whether every tale is fact or legend, and simply become listeners to a great story. I hope this journey will transport you back more than four thousand years, where you can witness the birth of China's first dynasty and the legendary saga of its eventual downfall.
