When school closes for the holidays, three friends set out on what should be a simple journey home. But for Kantai—known as Nomad—home is never one place. His family moves with their livestock across the open plains near Mount Kilimanjaro, following rain, grass, and survival. With no mobile phones, no maps, and only the dusty road ahead, Kantai, Mutiso, and Ocot must rely on courage, friendship, and the kindness of strangers to find their way.

As their journey leads them through bustling markets, quiet manyattas, and dangerous wilderness, the boys stumble into a world far larger—and far more dangerous—than they ever imagined. Cattle rustlers, ruthless poachers, and the sudden thunder of guns turn their holiday adventure into a fight for survival.

Set in rural Kenya in the 1980s, An Encounter with Poachers is a gripping coming-of-age story about bravery, loyalty, and finding one's place in a changing world—where the road home is not just a path across the land, but a journey of the heart.
