A rich man locks a public well because he paid for the pulley. Afanti sends the dirty water from the man’s own stable back through his gate.

A debtor owes five silver pieces. The harvest fails. The Bay concludes that the debtor’s daughter must work for him. Then a strange creature eats one word from the argument:

Therefore.

Suddenly the facts remain—but the conclusion no longer knows how it got there.

AFANTI AND THE BAY is a collection of seventy-two original philosophical fables built around a simple contest. The Bay is not a fool. He understands property, contracts, authority, reputation, incentives, and rules. Afanti does not possess perfect wisdom. He does something narrower and more dangerous: he asks whether a rule still makes sense when it is applied consistently.

In Part One, wells acquire second locks, shadows become taxable property, crowds repeat themselves, gods see only eight minutes at a time, and even Afanti eventually discovers that an auditor can be wrong.

Then the book opens a second door.

In Part Two, every case is examined again. Some judgments survive. Some reasons do not. Some cases are reopened. Some end with insufficient evidence. The same stories become investigations into fact, inference, consent, responsibility, observation, power, and the limits of criticism itself.

The final question is the hardest one: if Afanti can expose flaws in other people’s answers, does that mean he possesses the perfect answer?

His answer is only:

“I don’t know.”

Because not knowing the answer and seeing that an answer is broken are two different things.
