In the remote Russian village of Berezovka, sixteen-year-old Vasilisa grows up under the shadow of a cruel stepmother and a household sustained by a stolen fire. Before her death, Vasilisa's mother leaves her a mysterious cloth doll and two instructions: feed the fire before feeding herself, and always ask before taking.

Beyond the village lies the Chashcha, a forbidden forest ruled by the mysterious Baba Yaga, guardian of an ancient sacred fire. For generations, women have come to her fence seeking its flame. Those who truly ask may receive it—but only after completing impossible tasks and paying a price measured not in gold, but in truth.

When Vasilisa's father dies and her stepmother sends her into the forest to obtain fire, Vasilisa enters Baba Yaga's world expecting death. Instead, she discovers that the terrifying witch has been waiting for her.

As Vasilisa completes the witch's trials, she begins to uncover a secret connecting her mother's family, the ancient fire, and Baba Yaga herself. Their relationship gradually develops from fear and suspicion into trust, intimacy, and forbidden love. But the deeper Vasilisa enters the Chashcha, the more she realizes that the fire she came seeking is not merely a source of warmth—it is part of an ancient bargain that has bound Baba Yaga to the forest for centuries.

To save herself, the women who came before her, and the woman she has come to love, Vasilisa must decide whether the laws of the fire are meant to be obeyed—or broken.
