For twenty-two years, he stood the watch aboard ships across the world's oceans. Then he came home and found out the watch never really ended. It just changed posts.

Standing Watch is the memoir of a Navy retiree learning that duty doesn't stop when the uniform comes off. Through seven roles that shape a man over a lifetime, Sailor, Son, Brother, Friend, Husband, Father, and the private self underneath them all, Raffiel Cooke writes honestly about the discipline, doubt, and slow change that come from a life spent showing up, whether or not anyone was checking.

Each chapter follows the same simple rhythm. Reflect on the struggle as it actually happened. Refocus on what could actually be controlled. Resolve into who that struggle helped shape.

Along the way, Cooke writes about a failed qualification board, a marriage strained by deployment and rebuilt through vulnerability, a brotherhood nearly lost to silence, friendships that cost more than they gave, and the strange vertigo of retirement mornings with no muster to make.

This isn't a war story. It's a watch story: about the three a.m. decisions nobody sees, the relationships that are never really finished, and the discipline it takes to keep standing post long after the orders stop coming.

Grounded, honest, and quietly hopeful, Standing Watch is for veterans navigating life after service, for military spouses and children, and for anyone who has ever stood a post, literal or otherwise, and wondered if it was worth it.

It was.
