Fairies and Fusiliers captures Robert Graves at his most combative and inventive, where trench warfare collides with classical myth, fairy tale, and sharp-edged wit. Across these poems, soldiers, critics, saints, children, and legendary figures share the page in a voice that is defiant, ironic, and deeply humane. Graves rejects fashionable "newness" in art, defending old forms, plain speech, and the living force of imagination even as war, death, and memory press in. The collection moves from the blunt horror of Mametz Wood to moonlit childhood fears, winter fields, and dreamlike escapes from destruction. It balances patriotic irony, comradeship, grief, and survival with playful domestic scenes, surreal humor, and lyrical charm. Fauns, fairies, smoke-rings, cherries, and churchyards all become part of a world where enchantment has been damaged but not entirely extinguished. Beneath the comedy and fantasy runs a fierce sadness about innocence lost, heroic ideals broken, and the persistence of spirit in a world shadowed by mortality.
