Captain Chub opens with the crackle of a championship baseball game, where Crimson and Blue battle through a tense final inning and Tom "Chub" Eaton proves his nerve by drawing a walk, stealing bases, and scoring the winning run. The scene introduces the book's lively schoolboy energy: sharp competition, quick thinking, and the thrill of victory shared by classmates and crowd alike. As the game gives way to twilight in the study room, Chub, Roy Porter, and Dick Somes begin dreaming beyond college walls, their easy banter turning a hard-earned win into plans for a summer of freedom. At the center of those plans is the Jolly Roger, a houseboat cruise that promises baseball, river travel, camping, mischief, and plenty of comic complications. Letters from friends confirm the boat is available, and the boys weigh costs, comforts, and Harry Emery's famously experimental cooking while deciding how to make room for her and her mother aboard. Warm friendship, youthful ambition, and spirited humor drive this classic boys' adventure, ranging from campus life to outdoor escapades, burglaries, and social encounters.
