Tom Benton is a practical, restless high school boy in Audelsville, already looking beyond graduation for a way to earn money and make something of himself. When he spots a battered old automobile for sale, he sees more than a wreck: he sees a chance to turn the lonely station road into a business. His friend Willard Morris, at first amused, quickly catches the vision, and the two boys begin working out repairs, expenses, payments, and the possibility of running the car as a station-to-town taxi service. Tom's cautious father refuses at first, worrying about scarce family money and the rival livery trade, but then unexpectedly agrees to lend Tom fifty dollars as a business arrangement. With that support, the boys enlist mechanic Jimmy Brennan, bargain hard with the seller, and calculate every cost to keep the venture alive. Their persistence pays off when Willard secures station privileges through a citizen petition, giving them a real advantage. As Tom and Willard begin hauling passengers and facing off with the comic, combative hack driver Pat Herron, their small scheme grows into a lively test of ambition, ingenuity, and the changing world of motor transport.
