Description & Overview
Delivered in Boston on April 27, 1912, Theodore Roosevelt's fiery address turns a presidential campaign speech into a sweeping defense of progressive Republicanism and democratic reform. He insists the election is not a personal quarrel with William Howard Taft but a test of principle, contrasting his own openness with machine politics, boss influence, and the compromised allies he says surround his opponent. Calling on Massachusetts to follow its reformist heritage and Abraham Lincoln's example, Roosevelt invokes Lowell and Emerson to argue that democratic ideals must be lived in practice, not merely admired in verse. The speech widens into a forceful critique of courts that, in his view, protect moneyed interests while ignoring workers' suffering. Drawing on his experiences in the New York legislature and the West, Roosevelt defends brakemen, factory girls, tenement laborers, and injured workers, and champions laws on workplace safety, women's hours, and compensation. He argues for "radical democracy" in which the people may judge constitutional meaning when courts block justice. Rejecting charges of extremism, he presents his program as "elementary justice" and urges Massachusetts to lead the nation toward government by and for the average citizen.
