Description & Overview

Some kids grow up knowing exactly where they fit. Thomas wasn't one of them but his story will stay with you long after the last page.

Born in the autumn of 1968, Thomas enters a world filled with warmth, love, and complications. His mother's struggle with postpartum depression casts an early shadow over his childhood, while the love of his grandmother helps light the way. As he grows, Thomas discovers that joy and jealousy, friendship and loneliness, can exist side by side.

In kindergarten, Thomas discovers something about himself: he loves to learn, but the words on the page don't behave the way they should. Dyslexia makes school harder than it needs to be. When his family moves to Glenburn, a quieter town, Thomas finds himself feeling like an outsider among wealthier children who seem to have life figured out.

His best friend, Steven, becomes his anchor. Together they share pranks, adventures, and small acts of courage that help Thomas believe he might actually belong somewhere. But in seventh grade, Steven's parents transfer him to another school, leaving Thomas without his only real friend. He turns instead to the horses on the farm for comfort as he struggles to understand himself and find his place in the world.

Against the odds, Thomas graduates at the top of his high school class and moves to Philadelphia to attend the prestigious University of Pennsylvania's veterinary science program. There, he lives with his cousin Casey. Both men are gay, navigating life in a city that offers freedom but also danger.

Then one night, everything changes.

Casey is brutally attacked by a group of men. Rather than simply becoming victims, Thomas and Casey decide to take matters into their own hands. What begins as a desperate response to violence soon becomes something far darker—and far more dangerous.

They devise a chilling way to deal with the men responsible, and Thomas discovers an extraordinary idea: perhaps something beautiful can be created from the darkest circumstances.

Can darkness truly be transformed into diamonds?

Written by an author who lived through many of the experiences portrayed in Thomas's journey, Diamonds from Darkness is a deeply personal and character-driven story about childhood, perseverance, friendship, identity, trauma, and the complicated boundaries between justice and revenge.

Perfect for readers drawn to coming-of-age stories, personal journeys, difficult choices, and morally complex tales of vigilante justice.

If you've ever felt like you didn't quite fit in, Thomas's story may stay with you long after you've finished the book.

The Darkness Shines, the second book in the series, is also available now.
