For six weeks, the small industrial town of Montfroid loses more than its electricity. When the streetlamps go dark, Dr. Jeanne Morel — a widowed, sleep-deprived doctor on call — sees something no rational explanation can hold: a shadow peeling itself off a wall, writing a single word in a grainy, ash-black hand. Run.

By morning, a man is dead at the foot of his cellar stairs. By the end of the week, he won't be the last.

As more shadows detach from their owners — some warning, some arriving too late — Jeanne finds herself dragged into the buried history of Montfroid's abandoned power plant, a fifteen-year-old research programme no one was meant to remember, and a man who casts no shadow at all. He calls what happened to him a gift. He wants to share it with the entire town.

Racing against a deadline only the dead have kept, Jeanne must decide how far she'll go to stop him — and what it will cost her to find out whether her own late husband's death was ever the accident she was told it was.

A slow-burn small-town mystery with a supernatural edge, The Shadows of Midnight is for readers who loved the atmosphere of a locked-room thriller and the eerie unease of a story that never quite explains itself away — until it does.
