A literary historical novel following a single damaged harmonica across a century of war, exile, migration, music and repair.

Made in Germany in 1913 with one faulty reed, the harmonica travels from the Western Front to post-war Europe, from Ireland to Greenwich Village, from London's music rooms to Liverpool's punk scene, from Helmand back to a charity shop on County Road. Along the way it is played, traded, stolen, buried, repaired and abandoned by people trying to survive the times they have been given.

At once intimate and sweeping, Tin Sandwich is a novel about the private music ordinary people carry through history — and the objects that remember what people cannot bear to keep.
