The moment your dog looks past you for the treat pouch instead of at you for guidance, you've built dependency

rather than obedience. Estelle Wickham's insightful book explores the hidden cost of reward-based training that

teaches dogs to negotiate compliance rather than choose it.

Dog Training Without Treats: Beyond the Treat is not a rigid dominance manual, a pure-positive advocacy

guide, or a one-size-fits-all command list. Instead, it reveals the specific mechanisms that make treat-dependent

training unreliable under real-world pressure.

Through honest training failures and breakthrough moments, you'll understand the dynamics undermining

lasting obedience:

- The Transaction Trap: How food-first training accidentally teaches your dog to evaluate whether each

command is worth their compliance, creating negotiation instead of response.

- The Distraction Collapse: Why high-value distractions-squirrels, other dogs, compelling

scents-render treats invisible and expose the fragility of food-dependent obedience.

- The Parking Lot Problem: The moment when your dog lunges through a wave of treats because real

prey instinct outweighs any snack you're offering.

- The Mirror Neuron Gap: How constant treat focus can hinder your dog's natural ability to read your

emotional state and develop true understanding.

You'll learn practical alternatives that establish clear hierarchical structure, deploy verbal reinforcement at the

right moments, and build engagement rooted in understanding rather than hunger. Start reading Dog Training

Without Treats: Beyond the Treat today and train a dog who listens because they understand you, not because

they're waiting for payment.
