You know Gretzky, Orr, Howe and Lemieux. You can picture their highlights without trying. But what about the 40 men who made their greatness possible and then vanished from the conversation.
This book rescues those valleys between the mountains. You get 40 complete portraits of the NHL players history misplaced, not because they lacked talent, but because they played on the wrong team, in the wrong era, or with the wrong personality for a poster. Each story answers 3 questions: what he actually did, why hockey forgot him, and why you should care now.
You will meet the Bruin who made All Star at forward and defense, the Ojibwe flag bearer who had to hide his identity to win 2 Cups, the Bronx subway goalie who won a Cup as a rookie and then disappeared to Portland, and the Swedish 14th round pick who taught Detroit how to move the puck.
Inside, you will discover:
• How Taffy Abel carried the United States flag in 1924, won 2 Stanley Cups, and was shelved for asking for fair pay
• Why Dit Clapper is the only All Star at both forward and defense and how he retired with his number lifted to the rafters the same night
• How Stefan Persson, taken 214th overall, quarterbacked the Islanders power play to 93 goals and 4 straight Cups
• What made Guy Carbonneau and Billy Carroll kill 87% of penalties and invent the modern box
• Why Pierre Turgeon scored 1327 points and still needed until 2023 to make the Hall, and how era adjusted scoring changes everything
• How Borje Salming paid 250 stitches in a single season to open the NHL for every Swede after him
If you want trivia, you get it. If you want lineage, you get that too. Every profile includes a moment you can look up on grainy video, a 6 overtime marathon, a 10 game goal streak on a last place team, a shorthanded goal 33 seconds into a kill that saved a national team. Read it straight through and you will see the NHL itself from ice level instead of the broadcast booth.
