In a warm London drawing room, a witty evening gathering becomes a lively study of happiness, ambition, and the uneasy price of success. Sir Sedley Beaudesert, polished and admired, hides regret beneath his charm; Mr. Trevanion admits that public life has left him without conviction; and the battle-scarred Captain Roland offers a grim reminder that real suffering makes lesser complaints seem small. Against their anxieties, Austin Caxton's father delivers a playful private sermon on faith, duty, and endurance, while his domestic interruptions give the scene its intimate, bustling life. That household balance is soon tested by the arrival of Lady Ellinor, whose grace, tact, and intelligence captivate everyone while awakening buried feelings in Austin, Roland, and Mrs. Caxton. Her beauty is matched by ambition and pride, making her both dazzling and tragic. Pisistratus Caxton then chooses his own path, leaving college to serve Trevanion and enter the world of politics, where exhausting labor, social glitter, and his hopeless love for Fanny Trevanion sharpen his sense of purpose. Meanwhile, the family debates publishing, and Uncle Jack's bold scheme for The Literary Times turns literary idealism into a comic, high-stakes vision of modern influence.
