Description & Overview
On a cold, rain-soaked night at a nearly empty Pacific Northwest bus station, Marcie sees a figure in the doorway: an old, fog-wrapped shape with sorrowful, angry eyes that seem fixed on her alone. She tells herself it's nothing but exhaustion and hunger. But the figure calls to mind her brother Mickey, missing for three years since a hunting trip into the mountains, and she cannot shake the feeling that he is trying to reach her.
Back at the dark old house she shares with her brother, Dr. Murrey, Marcie finds herself pulled deeper into a mystery neither of them can explain. Strange visions visit her in the night. Dr. Murrey begins to hear a voice inside his own head, one he calls the Phantom, and his sister starts to suspect her brother is hiding something in his study, something tied to Mickey's disappearance and to a sickness she can't shake. A hidden notebook, a cryptic journal entry, and a presence that seems to watch from every shadow send Marcie past the edge of the world she knows.
What follows takes Marcie through a vortex into a realm between worlds, where she is told the truth about the Phantom, about her brother's fate, and about a role she never asked for: guardian of a thinning veil between reality and whatever lies beyond it. To save Mickey, she must learn to walk between those worlds herself, and to accept a destiny that will follow her long after the mystery of that first foggy night is resolved.
Blending gothic atmosphere with a dreamlike, shifting sense of reality, this is a story about grief, sibling loyalty, and the pull toward secrets that were never meant to be found by the living.
