What if the history you were taught about medieval Europe left out the most dangerous religious war fought on Italian soil?

For centuries, mainstream narratives have painted the High Middle Ages as a simple clash between Catholic orthodoxy and Dualist Cathars. But beneath the surface of 12th-century Lombardy, a far more radical faction was gaining ground—one that threatened the very foundations of the Vatican. They were the Passagians: Christians who declared that salvation required a return to the Old Testament. They embraced adult circumcision, enforced strict kosher dietary codes, kept the Saturday Sabbath, and rejected the divinity of Christ as taught by Rome. To the Pope, this was not just dissent; it was an existential betrayal that risked pulling the Western world back into the era of the Mosaic Covenant.

Enter Praepositinus of Cremona—a brilliant scholastic mind tasked with fashioning the intellectual weapons needed to annihilate this movement. In Praepositinus of Cremona and the Passagians, author Winston Maddox takes you far beyond sterile academic summaries and places you directly into the soot-stained scriptoriums, bustling communes, and high-tension papal councils of northern Italy. Experience the intellectual violence as Praepositinus crafts his Summa contra haereticos, supplying canon lawyers with the logical frameworks that would eventually fuel the Inquisition. Feel the panic running through the papal curia as Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and Pope Lucius III forge an unholy alliance at the Council of Verona to crush the Circumcised Heretics once and for all.

This isn't a passive history lesson; it is an immersive, gritty, and meticulous reconstruction of a forgotten war for the soul of Europe. Readers will walk the muddy streets of Cremona and Milan, stand inside secret assemblies where blood rituals were debated, and witness the brutal collision between legalistic heresy and papal power. Written specifically for the seasoned history buff who demands primary-source depth, uncompromising detail, and a gripping narrative drive, this book exposes the hidden mechanics of medieval power, religious suppression, and ideological survival.

Will you dare to uncover the forbidden truth that Rome spent centuries trying to bury?
