Description & Overview
A satirical pamphlet has made the narrator unexpectedly fashionable, opening the doors of high society and drawing him into a world where wit, appetite, and influence are inseparable. At Almack's and then at the table of the indolent, pleasure-loving Lord Guloseton, he enters a comic philosophy of dining that treats a ruined meal as a disaster and elevates sauces, fine dishes, and even monastic cooks into objects of reverence. Over dinner, the two men turn gastronomy into a creed, quoting classics, praising Ude, and speaking of the stomach as though it were a deity. But the novel's polished social comedy soon darkens. A desperate message from Reginald Glanville draws the narrator into a duel challenge involving Sir John Tyrrell, whose rough, straining pride contrasts with Glanville's chilling calm. Around the same time, political fortunes shift as a Whig motion collapses, and the narrator is sent to win over the independent Marquis of Chester. Using tact, horsemanship, and calculated charm, he secures support in a landscape of country politics, gambling, and uneasy alliances, all while the journey grows more ominous and strange.
