What happens when the office meant to unite the Church becomes the center of its greatest disagreements?

In The Capital Schism, Peter Elias explores one of the most pressing questions facing Catholics today: how can the faithful remain united when they hold radically different visions of papal authority, tradition, reform, and obedience?

This book examines the growing divisions within Catholic life, not as a formal rupture of communion, but as a struggle over the very meaning of authority itself. It explores why Catholics disagree about the role of the pope, how papal power should be understood, where its limits exist, and what faithful resistance looks like when Church leadership faces human weakness.

Through Scripture, Church teaching, historical examples, and theological reflection, The Capital Schism examines the foundations of the Petrine ministry, the nature of papal infallibility, the hierarchy of Catholic teaching, the relationship between tradition and development, and the lessons of past crises such as the Western Schism and controversies surrounding papal authority.

Rather than defending a faction, this work challenges both extremes: the temptation to treat every papal statement as unquestionable and the temptation to reject legitimate authority when leadership disappoints. It calls Catholics back to a deeper understanding of identity rooted not in political camps, personalities, or internal battles, but in faith, sacrament, communion, holiness, and mission.

For Catholics struggling with confusion, conflict, and uncertainty, The Capital Schism offers a thoughtful guide for navigating controversy without abandoning either truth or unity.

A serious exploration of authority, loyalty, and the future of Catholic identity, this book invites readers to seek clarity beyond faction, communion beyond conflict, and faith beyond division.
