After a devastating family tragedy leaves her completely alone, Clare is uprooted from everything she's ever known and sent to live with her three aunts—Jessica, Sabrina, and Holly—in a secluded house nestled deep beside an ancient, shadowy forest.

Grieving and desperate for a sense of normalcy, Clare's world is upended when she meets Lucas—a breathlessly handsome, enigmatic stranger who wears a mask to hide his past and moves through her life with an inescapable, intoxicating authority. But the house harbors dark secrets far older and colder than the woods outside. Hidden far beneath the floorboards, locked within a subterranean basement, lurks an apex predator—a terrifying, shadowy beast that watches Clare's every breath, tracks her racing heart rate, and lays claim to her very soul.

Unbeknownst to Clare, the monster in the dark and the seductive man holding her spellbound are one and the same. Capable of shifting between human perfection and a creature of raw, violent fury, Lucas exerts a possessive control that blurs the line between safety and danger, desire and terror. As her aunts try to keep the household grounded, nightmares bleed into reality and the house itself seems to listen. Clare must face the ultimate question: is she being protected, or is she being hunted by the very thing she is falling for?
