First published in 1903, Love and Lucy shows Maurice Hewlett-celebrated for his sweeping historical romances of medieval Italy and France-turning his considerable gifts to a lighter register: a warm, witty romance of courtship in his own era. With his characteristic richness of prose, sharp eye for character, and dry, affectionate humor, Hewlett follows his heroine Lucy through the entanglements of love and the misunderstandings that so often stand between two people and their happiness. This edition reproduces the COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED original text exactly as first published, pairing it with a new introduction that sets the novel in the context of Hewlett's career and the literary culture of the early twentieth century, along with reader's notes illuminating the period language, customs, and allusions that modern readers may stumble over. A forgotten pleasure from one of Edwardian England's most popular storytellers. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
