First published in German in the 1890s, On the Cross is Wilhelmine von Hillern's sweeping romance set in the shadow of the world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play. In the isolated Bavarian village where, for generations, players have taken the stage to enact the sufferings of Christ, von Hillern unfolds a story of faith tested, love forbidden, and the heavy price of devotion — a drama in which the line between sacred performance and lived sacrifice grows perilously thin. This edition presents the COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED original text, faithfully reproduced for modern readers, together with a new introduction that situates the novel within the tradition of Alpine fiction and the cultural history of the Passion Play itself, along with reader's notes illuminating the customs, places, and language of the Ammer valley. A moving rediscovery for lovers of historical and regional fiction. Part of The Founding Texts Library.
