The Baltimore Gun Club Series by Jules Verne is a classic adventure and science-fiction series built around the extraordinary ambitions of American weapons enthusiasts and the possibilities of technological innovation. The series is centered on From the Earth to the Moon and its sequel, Around the Moon, which follow the members of the Baltimore Gun Club as they turn their attention from warfare to space exploration.

In From the Earth to the Moon, the Gun Club’s energetic president, Impey Barbicane, proposes an astonishing project: launching a projectile from Earth to the Moon using an enormous cannon. The plan attracts international attention, and French adventurer Michel Ardan volunteers to join the mission. Despite scientific difficulties, disagreements, and numerous dangers, the group constructs the massive Columbiad gun in Florida.

In Around the Moon, Barbicane, Ardan, and Captain Nicholl travel inside the projectile as it journeys through space. Their expedition becomes a thrilling exploration of the Moon and the challenges of surviving beyond Earth.

Verne combines scientific speculation, humor, adventure, engineering, and human courage. The series reflects nineteenth-century fascination with technological progress while imagining space travel decades before it became reality.

The Gun Club’s transformation from a society devoted to artillery into a group attempting lunar exploration provides a humorous yet visionary foundation for Verne’s exploration of science, invention, exploration, and human ambition.
