Description & Overview

When Anko Alfie travels with his family from Harare to his grandmother's hilltop home in Mutambara, Manicaland, he encounters something he can never forget: strange balls of fire moving through the valley at night, an ancestral bowl kept beneath a bed, and a family whose relationship with the unseen is older than any explanation they can give him.

Curiosity draws the young Anko toward the bowl. After secretly speaking to it and asking to see the future, he begins having dreams that appear to reveal events before they happen. In one, his deceased grandfather stands beside a river carrying the bowl and singing a song Anko has never knowingly heard—until his father recognises it.

Fear follows the gift. His mother prays for the supernatural connection to stop, and the visions disappear. Years pass. Anko grows into adulthood believing the door may have closed forever.

Then the bowl returns.

So do the dreams.

What begins as a search for proof becomes an investigation into family memory, ancestral belief, inherited spiritual roles, coercion, consent and the stories families tell about the dead. As Anko examines old records, testimony, songs and family history, the idea of a simple, unbroken line of "keepers" begins to collapse.

Some ancestors accepted responsibility. Some refused. Some carried it only temporarily. Some were pressured into saying yes. Others tried to return what had been placed upon them.

At the river, where the oldest stories converge, Anko must finally confront the question beneath every dream, light, song and sign:

What do we truly inherit from the people who came before us—and what are we free to let end with us?

Rooted in the landscapes of Zimbabwe and African ancestral belief, The Bowl of the Ancestors is a literary supernatural novel about prophecy, family, memory, fear, scepticism, spiritual responsibility and the difference between receiving an inheritance and surrendering your right to choose.

At its heart is a powerful question: must we repeat the lives of our ancestors to honour them, or can remembering them truthfully give us the freedom to choose a different path?
