Description & Overview

You got everything you wanted. Why does something still feel missing?

It happens to almost everyone and almost nobody says it out loud. The promotion arrives. The house is bought. The person says yes. And somewhere in the quiet afterwards — in a car park, in a kitchen at midnight, on the fourth day of a good holiday — an ache turns up that has no name and no obvious cause.

Most books tell you the ache means something is missing, and offer to help you find it.

This one does not.

THE PEACE NOBODY CAN GIVE YOU is an unhurried examination of why the searching has never worked — and what becomes visible when it finally goes quiet.

Across thirty-five chapters, it takes apart every place we have been taught to look:

• Another person, who can carry you through a terrible night and cannot supply an ordinary Tuesday

• Money, whose ceiling on suffering arrives far earlier than anyone expects, and which then buys position instead — and position has no ceiling

• Achievement, which quietly stops describing what you did and starts requiring maintenance

• Approval, from an internal audience of four or five people, at least one of whom is dead

• Comparison, the only machine that can turn someone else's good news into your bad news without a single fact changing

Then it turns the attention around — from what is being sought to the one doing the seeking — and rebuilds ordinary life on a different footing. Love without ownership. Wanting without being owned by it. Silence without needing something on in the background. Living without the guarantee that nobody, anywhere, has ever been given.

The book moves in five parts:

• THE SEARCH — why the ache arrives at the moment of achievement rather than failure, and why almost nobody admits to it

• THE OUTSIDE WORLD — what happens inside love, money, status and reputation when you look closely

• THE TURNING — the thoughts that arrive without being sent for, and the story you have been standing on rather than holding

• INNER FREEDOM — rest without permission, love without possession, wanting without slavery, control without the grip

• THE PEACE NOBODY CAN GIVE YOU — the ordinary ground that was there the whole time

What this book does not do

It does not promise peace. No method, no steps, no protocol, no ninety-day plan. It never suggests that your difficulties are illusions or that you need a better attitude. It is honest about what it does not know, and honest that what it describes comes and goes.

It is written for the person who has done everything correctly — the work, the relationship, the self-improvement, the moving city — and is still, quietly, looking for something.

Read this if you have ever thought:

• "I have no reason to feel this way, which somehow makes it worse."

• "I will be able to relax once this one thing is sorted."

• "I am tired of becoming a better version of myself."

• "I cannot say any of this out loud without sounding ungrateful."

Plain, unhurried prose. No jargon, no borrowed scripture, not a single guru. For readers of Eckhart Tolle, Mark Manson, Oliver Burkeman and Pema Chödrön who would rather have the argument made carefully than shouted.

Peace is not something the world can give you. It is what you begin to notice when you stop demanding that the world make you peaceful.
