Marjorie in Command follows the lively Maynard children through a season of domestic upheaval, comic mishaps, and growing responsibility. When Mrs. and Mr. Maynard leave home for six weeks, Marjorie, King, Kitty, and little Rosy Posy must reckon with Miss Larkin, a well-meaning but formidable guest whose old-fashioned ideas clash with their spirited household. What begins in dread soon becomes a test of manners, leadership, and affection, as Marjorie tries to act as hostess and keep order amid sibling teasing and household confusion. Carolyn Wells gives the story its charm through sharp banter, warm family feeling, and a string of memorable episodes: the children's overdecorated welcome for Miss Larkin, their rescue of the Simpson family after a fire, a clever community effort to shelter the displaced children, and a playful tree-word contest that ends in Marjorie's blush-inducing triumph. Even a disastrous spring ramble turns into part of the fun when the children return mud-streaked just as their parents arrive home early. Full of mischief, kindness, and small-town goodwill, this cheerful tale captures the pleasures and embarrassments of childhood under pressure.
